6.5 Population Pyramids

This portion of the assignment looks at the population and gender demographics for Southwest Asia. If you need a refresher on population pyramids, go to China’s Population Demographics. By studying the current population numbers and projections for the future, you will be able to predict consequences and make informed suggestions for solutions. By the end of this assignment, you should be able to:

  • Analyze population pyramids to interpret and hypothesize the population age and gender composition in several Southwest Asian countries.
  • Interpret numbers and proportions of males and females for each age group in Southwest Asian countries.

Saudi Arabia’s Population Pyramid

Go to PopulationPyramid.net and search for Saudi Arabia. Make sure you are looking at the most current population pyramid to answer the following questions.

Geographic Questions
  • What age group has the largest number of people?
  • What age group has the second-largest number of people?
  • Is more of the population under 15 or over 65? (Note: If you place the mouse over the gender of each age group, a raw number will be shown.)
  • When should the population begin to decline?
  • Does the population pyramid show rapid growth, slow growth, zero growth, or negative growth?
  • Count the total number of males and the total number of females. Are there more males or females?
  • Are there more males or females in the country’s pre-reproductives?
  • Are there more males or females in the country’s reproductive ages?
  • Are there more males or females in the country’s post-reproductive ages?

Israel’s Population Pyramid

Go to PopulationPyramid.net and search for Israel. Make sure you are looking at the most current population pyramid to answer the following questions.
