2.4 South Asia’s Population Demographics

This portion of the assignment looks at the population and gender demographics for South Asia. India and Pakistan are the two major powers of the region. If you need a refresher on population pyramids, go to China’s Population Demographics. By studying the current population numbers and projections for the future, you will be able to predict consequences and make informed suggestions for solutions. By the end of this assignment, you should be able to:

  • Analyze population pyramids to interpret and hypothesize the population age and gender composition in China.
  • Interpret numbers and proportions of males and females for each age group in China.

India’s Population Pyramid

Go to PopulationPyramid.net and search for India. Make sure you are looking at the most current population pyramid to answer the following questions.

Geographic Questions
  • What age group in India has the largest number of people?
  • What age group in India has the second-largest number of people?
  • How many population bulges are there in the pyramid?
  • Is more of India’s population under 15 or over 65? (Note: If you place the mouse over the gender of each age group, a raw number will be shown.)
  • When should India’s population begin to decline?
  • Does the population pyramid show rapid growth, slow growth, zero growth, or negative growth in India?
  • Count the total number of males and the total number of females. Are there more males or females in India?
  • Are there more males or females in the country’s pre-reproductives?
  • Are there more males or females in the country’s reproductive ages?
  • Are there more males or females in the country’s post-reproductive ages?

Pakistan’s Population Pyramid
