POPS Project Categories and Example Topics

As part of this semester-long group project, you will work with up to five classmates to explore a research topic of your choice.  You’ll select one topic from the seven research categories listed below. Each category offers a range of possibilities for exploration.  To spark your creativity, we have included examples of past students’ projects. While you may choose to build on a previous project, your approach must introduce new methods, variables, and insights.

  1. Circadian Rhythm
  • Example: The Influence of Electronic Device Restriction and Blue Light Reduction on Circadian Rhythm
  • Brief: Students tracked sleep quality and quantity while modifying device usage before bedtime.
  1. Cardiovascular Health
  • Example: Chilly or Chili?
  • Brief: Students measured ECG responses to cold exposure (ice water) and spicy food (capsaicin).
  1. Muscles and Exercise
  • Example: Effects of Creatine on Strength and Muscle Mass
  • Brief: Students tested how daily creatine supplements affected muscle size, BMI, and strength.
  1. Nervous System
  • Example: The Effects of Caffeine on Short-Term Memory
  • Brief: Students analyzed memory test performance after varying caffeine doses.
  1. Biomolecules and Energetics
  • Example: Impact of Fish Consumption on Cardiovascular Health
  • Brief: Students examined how weekly fish intake influenced cholesterol and lipid profiles.
  1. Respiratory System
  • Example: Effects of Cold Showers on Blood Oxygenation
  • Brief: Students tracked oxygenation changes after gradually increasing exposure to cold water.
  1. Fluid Homeostasis and Renal Function
  • Example: Urine Trouble! Drink Electrolytes!
  • Brief: Students compared hydration status after consuming water versus electrolyte solutions.
