Introduction

The central theme of physiology is homeostasis, which is the regulation of the internal environment to maintain stable, balanced state.  Each individual’s physiology is unique due to genetic differences, so set points and ranges for physiological variables can vary widely.  While the reported set points are average for populations, an individual’s values may fall outside these averages.  This project aims to help students explore and track their own physiological variables, gaining better understanding of and potentially improving their personal homeostasis.

Undergraduate Research and High Impact Practices (HIPs)

The American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) lists undergraduate research as a High Impact Practice (HIP).  HIPs are proven to be beneficial for students from diverse backgrounds. Research is essential for understanding and mastering scientific inquiry, critical for careers in both basic and applied sciences, including health sciences.  This project requires you to plan, execute, and analyze a research project to explore your personal physiology.

POPS Project Details

The POPS Project involves creating a small research project based on physiological principles.  You will design a plan, carry out experiments, collect and analyze data, and create figures to explain your findings.  You will present your research at the end of the semester, sharing insights and significance with your peers.

Project Guidelines

You will work in groups of up to five students, selecting one of seven categories for your research project.  Consider your interests and potential group members for the next 16 weeks.  You must sign a waiver to share your anonymized data.
